Post-Concussion Syndrome Treatment

Post-concussion syndrome refers to a collection of symptoms that persist after a concussion.  Concussions, which are mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI), often result from a blow or jolt to the head, but can also occur with rapid change in head velocity without involving any direct head impact.  Excessive forces created as the brain moves rapidly within the skull damages neural tissue which can impair sensory, motor and/or cognitive function.   Thankfully, approximately 80% of concussions fully resolve within 4-6 weeks.  Symptoms that persist for months or even years after injury are often collectively referred to as post-concussion syndrome.

Not everyone diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome experience visual or vestibular symptoms. However, when they do, optometric vision rehabilitation can be integral components of the multidisciplinary care team for post-concussion syndrome.  By addressing visual symptoms and dysfunctions, optometrists play a vital role in improving outcomes and enhancing the overall rehabilitation process for individuals recovering from a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury.
